Made to Stick Audiobook Review

The Made to Stick Audiobook is an excellent rendition of Chip and Dan Heath's book "Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die." The audiobook is performed by Charles Kahlenberg who does a fine job with the reading. The Heath brother's writing in Made to Stick reminds me a lot of Malcolm Gladwell's writing still - simple ideas woven together with interesting stories. After all, an audiobook should be entertaining, and The Made To Stick Audiobook does it well.

Chip Heath is a Stanford professor and Dan Heath seems to be a combination of researcher and entrepreneur. It's a good combination that may explain why the book is so enjoyable and usable.

The basic message of the book can be boiled down to the SUCCES acronym the authors use to try and make their ideas memorable. Although, I have to admit that I seem to have a hard time remembering all the steps.

SUCCES stands for Simplicity, Unexpectedness, Concreteness, Credibility, Emotions and Stories. These are the elements that the authors view as the steps to making an idea sticky.

The bulk of the book is made up of stories walking through each of the six steps providing example after example of their ideas.

I really enjoyed their use of urban myths to bring their ideas to life. It's somewhat scary to see how really successful urban myths exploit the SUCCES steps and become so powerful. The first myth really gets your attention. They tell the story of a man who thinks he's found a good time in bar when he's picked up by a pretty woman, but wakes up to a shocking truth. (I won't tell the end - it would spoil the story.) The myth is simple story that's easy to understand, the outcome is unexpected, the details are concrete and it leaves you somewhat scared. The myth is a perfect blend of the SUCCES principles in action.

Subway's Jared campaign plays a staring role as one of the primary examples. Other examples come from advertising campaigns of various sorts, particularly those intended to change large groups of people.

The Made to Stick audiobook provides lots of practical and usable strategies for making your ideas "stick". This is one area where the authors improve on Gladwell's style. While I enjoy Gladwell's books a lot, I find them hard to use in real life. Not so with Made to Stick, the Heath brothers give us a lot to work with.

Be sure to keep a notebook handy while you listen. I found my self want to capture the ideas and make sure they stuck with me, so I can put them into practice.

Green Zone Review - Imperial Life within the Emerald City Audiobook

There have been many books written about the war in Iraq. Many pass judgment and take positions about the war, however, Rajiv Chandrasekaran takes a different angle in his Green Zone audiobook called the Imperial Life within the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone. His is well told story and interesting narrative on the Americans who came to Iraq after the war. In what I call the Green Zone audiobook, he identifies key mistakes made by the Coalition Provisional Authority and profiles a few of the primary figures, and he goes into the experiences from the low level staffers who made up the majority of the Coalition Provisional Authority. This audiobook is an essential addition to the public's knowledge about America's place in Iraq.

Since the book is written from a very first individual perspective, Ray Porter's audiobook narrative is smooth and flowing. Clocking in at just over 10 hours the Green Zone Audiobook is a fascinating performance.

Interspersed with the chapters on the Coalition Provisional Authority 's efforts are vignettes on life inside the Green Zone. Some are amusing, some identify the political influences with the staffers, and others discuss some of bizarre decisions of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Throughout the course on the narrative, Chandrasekaran identifies a number of issues that got in the way of the Coalition Provisional Authority goal of restarting Iraq. First, little post-war planning was done by the Department of Defense and Department of State, and when it came to plan, political tensions were dominant. Second, the dismissal of the Iraqi Army led to trained soldiers without jobs who could have become the backbone of a Iraqi security force, but were left to join the insurgency. Third, the people that were selected to staff the Coalition Provisional Authority have been generally quite young with minor or no real experience; with many selected based on who they knew and who they supported politically. Eager to go to Iraq out of patriotism and adventure, most only stayed 3-4 months, producing making it difficult to plan and execute the rebuilding program.

A major issue was the existence of the Green Zone, which was a self-contained American city in the middle of Baghdad. Travel outside the Green Zone just didn't happen and if it did only personnel who absolutely had to enter Baghdad could go. Reporters like Chandrasekaran, however lived by a different set of rules. They could live outside the Green Zone and could travel at will across Iraq. Since they didn't know what was going on beyond the walls of the Green Zone, the Coalition Provisional Authority had difficulty creating successful policy decisions. Lots of ideas that sounded great on paper didn't perform well outside the Zone.

Finally, the Coalition Provisional Authority leadership thought that they could just import American ways of doing business, finance and governing and that using them in Iraq was the finest solution. As we now know, American ways were did not work as well for Iraq.

Imperial Life is mostly about Chandrasekaran's observations on the lives of folks within the Green Zone and how they impacted post-war Iraq rather than a detailed history. Chandrasekaran does not force his views upon the listener, but rather lets the listener to make the judgments for themselve. He focuses on his experience and the things he saw while he was in Baghdad, and it makes for a solid and relevant story that is well read Ray Porter.

Shutter Island Audiobook Review

The Shutter Island Audiobook for iPod is definitely worth getting. Dennis Lehane, the author, has written seven novels, A Drink Before the War, Darkness, Take My Hand, Sacred, Gone Baby Gone, Prayers for Rain, Mystic River and Shutter Island. I had previously enjoyed Lehane's Mystic River and the trailers for the Shutter Island movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley look thrilling, so I wanted to try the audiobook performance as well.

The story involves two U.S. Marshall's investigating an escape from a hospital for the criminally insane. The hospital is located on Shutter Island just off the coast of Massachusetts. It is, of course, a dark and stormy night and nothing on the island is what it seems. When one of the Marshall's goes missing, the main character, Teddy Daniels, must go on alone. But the closer Teddy gets to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more he begins to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island because someone is trying to drive them insane. The more Teddy learns about Shutter Island the more determined he is to get out and turn the whole thing over to the FBI so they can investigate the place - but the staff seems increasingly intent on not permitting Teddy to leave at all.

Dennis Lehane writes with one plot twist after another producing a compelling psychological thriller that will leave listeners in suspense right up to the end. The end of the audio book is a complete surprise and shows Lehane's skill as a author. The last part of the audio book is an absolute stunner and when you're done you might just feel breathless from the ending of this chilling tale.

The narration is first rate and well paced. Tom Stechschulte does an incredible job of bringing this scary story to life. It's a performance that grabs your attention and doesn't let go - a tribute to the skills of this fabulous writer and a great narrator. I'm glad I listened to the audiobook performance right before the movie came out. After seeing the trailer with Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy, it made the audio book performance even more satisfying. This is a great audiobook. This audiobook makes you think and keeps you wondering all the way until the end. Definitely, get this audiobook. You will NOT be disappointed.

Dear John Audiobook Review

This is a review of the Dear John Audiobook for iPod, iPhone and MP3 players.

Initially, I anticipated this mp3 audiobook to become an sappy romance history where the primary characters wind up living happily ever after. The starting definitely seemed like it, nevertheless as the Dear John audiobook progresses it becomes clearer and clearer that it isn't just an sappy romance but a story about love and also the numerous ways love can be shown.

John Tyree is really a soldier very first, a man second. Or so he thinks, till he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis. While on leave, he falls desperately in love with Savannah, the proverbial girl of his dreams. Sweet, intelligent, and providing, John know she is the love of his life.

September 11 changed us all and John is no exception. Moved by patriotic loyalty, he chooses to "re-up" in the army, adding time to his service and breaking his guarantee to return to Savannah. Many more promises are broken when he should attending to his ailing father.

This may be the story of how love can falter, despite its purity and strength. Not every romance has a joyful ending, but with some good fortune, people who do not survive will discover meaning from the journey. Love and loyalty, friendship and fidelity are sentiments to cherish, but to what price? And how does this make a good guy great? This really is John's journey to that knowing.

Listent to the Dear John audiobook I discovered my heart was aching for the characters. I could somewhat personally relate to this mp3 Dear John audiobook. For me this was a lot a lot more than just a Dear John audiobook for my ipod however it was a story with meaning, a sign pointing towards the healing. I suggest this Dear John audiobook to anybody who enjoys a story about absolute love. I also believe that individuals who love Dear John audiobooks that make them believe might appreciate this audio book also, since the Dear John audiobook does leave the listener having a whole lot to believe about and I'm certain a whole lot of individuals can reflect back to their pasts or maybe even their existing existence and re-evaluate a whole lot of experiences.

While I like listening to the Dear John Dear John audiobook, I did have some difficulties with eloquence from the primary character and some plot difficulties.

For the man, who in no way truly took to school, went to school, or did much reading - he's truly freaking eloquent. Sometimes he sounds like an old man attempting to speak like a young man. For instance, who says "coed" to describe female school students? The other half the time the character, John, speaks like a highly educated, school or graduate bound student. The guys I know do not speak like this whatsoever. So it made it a tiny bit less believable.

It goes with out saying that Nicholas Sparks is among today's "master" storytellers. A part of what makes him so good is that he has the capability to produce moving stories with out pulling punches or painful twists. True to form this is the situation in Dear John. Sparks provides a love story which has all of the requisite components--well-crafted setting, higher emotion, obstacles, resolution--then breaks it. It's from your sadness that hope emerges, and John Tyree, even though even now very young, gains wisdom that may last a lifetime. Sorrow is going to be a big a part of this, yes, but there's room for some thing much more, some thing that may achieve over and above the pages and touch John's heart tomorrow in the way only he will see.

While this works, there's some thing lacking. It's among these hard-to-define qualities that marks the distinction among a great mp3 audio book and 1 that's excellent. Perhaps it is the heavy reliance on John's soldiering as an excuse for particular behaviors.

In any case, if you like Nicholas Sparks other audiboooks. You will like Dear John Audiobook by Nicholas Sparks.

Under the Dome Audiobook by Stephen King - Audiobook Review

I could not resist listening to Stephen King's new audiobook, Under the Dome, despite the daunting activity of thirty four hours of listening. The Under the Dome audiobook is pure Stephen King and narrated excellently by Raul Esparza. Apparently, King started out the book back within the 1970s, only to return to finish it now.

In Under the Dome, King does what he does most effective - display us just how despicable and wicked people may be. The monsters here are human, and they are terrifying.

He starts us out in the wonderful tiny New England city of Chester's Mill. It's peaceful and wonderful. It will be the best small American town. Then it all alterations inside the flash of a crash right into a pressure field like dome which has trapped the smaller population center Under an impenetrable barrier.

The smaller population center is isolated and unable to reach the outside world. Death follows promptly with plane and vehicle crashes. No just one knows what's happening or how to break by the dome. What's this invisible dome? Why is it happening? Why the following? Why now? That's when the nearby populace starts off going bad.

King makes use of his expertise to send the regional inhabitants into a tailspin of sinister action and frightening turns. Worry, conspiracy, corruption as well as murder begin to terrorize the village. Vicious characters have control. A virtual dictatorship ensues with total on police control. The human population of Chester's Mill is frozen with fear, and as typical that is a trigger for individuals accomplishing points they would by no means even ponder Under other circumstances.

Terror and an internal battle for deal with naturally arise from the tension and from deal with circumstances. It can be a battle of Evil versus not so evil that shows us just how ugly individuals can get. It is usually a battle for their lives, with individuals carrying out something and almost everything terrible you possibly can picture. With breath using horror, just when it seems the sort of fine guys could win, King pulls the rug out from Under them yet once again.

This audiobook is a scary ride into terror and horrible actions that only humans can inflict upon just one an additional. The moment you begin listening, you can be addicted towards story and energy through this marathon overall performance.

My last warning, don't start listening towards the operation of this audiobook unless you could have some time on your hands. Uncomfortable however the efficiency could be, it's thirty 4 compelling and suspenseful several hours of listening, but the moment you start, it speedily becomes unattainable to stop.

Here's a cool video trailer.

Game Change Audiobook Review

Game Change, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin and narrated By Dennis Boutsikaris, had Washington shaking even before it went on sale. It reveals some shocking information about the 2008 presidential campaign. The authors went out of their way to find out the back story and gossip from numerous angles on the candidates and on others around them. Senator Harry Reid, leader of the Senate, was singled out for racially insensitive words about then Senator Barrack Obama.

Everyone is a target in this audiobook. Mrs Edwards was even a target when the audiobook described her temper and anger with John Edwards shenanigans. The authors expose more about the Sarah Palin selection and how rushed the process was. Not only was no one in the Republican leadership consulted, but little thought and consideration appears to be given to the choice. The choice knocked the Obama campaign of balance for a while and the McCain campaign got a shot in the arm, but you've got to hear the drama behind the scenes to believe it.

The staging and telepromting of Obama was a major part of their campaign. They show the two sides of the man, calm cool and collected when on the stump, profane with flashes of anger off the stump. "This #@!% would be really interesting if we weren't in the middle of it."--Barack Obama, September 2008

The Clintons take their hits as well. President Clinton's inappropriate comments and Obama's observation that Hillary could not control her husband. TWe also learn from the audiobook that Clinton needed to be sold hard to take the job at State. The book opens doors into other mysteries from the campaign like Giuliani's Florida gamble and why he left the race.

When listen to the book it's like living through the campaign once again, but you get to be the fly on the wall with inside view of what really goes on. You will come away for the story with a wonder about where in the heck the press was. Were they completely asleep at the switch. To me, the lack of insight from the press was so disappointing.

I recommend getting the audiobook and finding out what really happened.
