Shutter Island Audiobook Review

The Shutter Island Audiobook for iPod is definitely worth getting. Dennis Lehane, the author, has written seven novels, A Drink Before the War, Darkness, Take My Hand, Sacred, Gone Baby Gone, Prayers for Rain, Mystic River and Shutter Island. I had previously enjoyed Lehane's Mystic River and the trailers for the Shutter Island movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley look thrilling, so I wanted to try the audiobook performance as well.

The story involves two U.S. Marshall's investigating an escape from a hospital for the criminally insane. The hospital is located on Shutter Island just off the coast of Massachusetts. It is, of course, a dark and stormy night and nothing on the island is what it seems. When one of the Marshall's goes missing, the main character, Teddy Daniels, must go on alone. But the closer Teddy gets to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more he begins to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island because someone is trying to drive them insane. The more Teddy learns about Shutter Island the more determined he is to get out and turn the whole thing over to the FBI so they can investigate the place - but the staff seems increasingly intent on not permitting Teddy to leave at all.

Dennis Lehane writes with one plot twist after another producing a compelling psychological thriller that will leave listeners in suspense right up to the end. The end of the audio book is a complete surprise and shows Lehane's skill as a author. The last part of the audio book is an absolute stunner and when you're done you might just feel breathless from the ending of this chilling tale.

The narration is first rate and well paced. Tom Stechschulte does an incredible job of bringing this scary story to life. It's a performance that grabs your attention and doesn't let go - a tribute to the skills of this fabulous writer and a great narrator. I'm glad I listened to the audiobook performance right before the movie came out. After seeing the trailer with Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy, it made the audio book performance even more satisfying. This is a great audiobook. This audiobook makes you think and keeps you wondering all the way until the end. Definitely, get this audiobook. You will NOT be disappointed.
